Traveling to us from Austria, Studio Dan was founded by Daniel Riegler in 2005 for the JazzWerkstatt Wien’s first festival. The ensemble started as big band, but has since morphed into a flexible new musical ensemble to perform in various permutations, depending on the project. The group operates on the borders between diverse subgenres of contemporary music: improvisation, new music, jazz, and (art) rock, to name only a few. Studio Dan is the only Austrian large ensemble belonging neither to the jazz big band mainstream nor to the strictly interpretive contemporary chamber music culture. Instead, the ensemble organically combines composition and improvisation, exploring beyond the bounds of simplistic categories. Riegler, who arranged the Zappa pieces especially for this performance does not want to appear as a cover band, but rather wants to follow his vision of "a great orchestral layer with a very special sound" with the different musical personality of the illustrious ensemble."
One of the instruments they play is a Bicycle!

The band’s name is a play on Frank Zappa’s 1978 album, Studio Tan, released 40 years ago this year.

This is a designated BYO performance. Acceptable forms of BYO are 6-pack of beer and/or 750ml bottles of wine only; no liquor or open containers are permitted. Limit of one (1) 750ml bottle of wine OR one (1) six-pack of beer per two guests. Corkscrews and rolling coolers are not permitted. Ice, cups and corking service available at venue at no cost. All BYO Night guests are subject to lawful ID checks and bag checks at the manager’s discretion.
